“How did this happen to me?”
“Everyone hates me.”
“If you’re good, it won’t hurt.”
Cutting, drinking, isolation, disconnecting; these are some of the thoughts and behaviors the author and illustrator of this graphic novel has experienced since she was sexually exploited as a child. She acknowledges the traumatic flashbacks all while parenting her own child.
The illustrations appear in various shades of black, white and gray. The panels include artwork that encompass collage, photography, and realistic line drawings. As the author shares her handwritten text, excerpts from media, and patient files, the reader can’t help but feel a part of Walker’s healing process. Although some of the panels touch on difficult topics, the story is accessible to a wide range of ages; from older childhood to adult.
