Mary Higgins Clark is back with a novel that is almost guaranteed to claim a spot on the bestseller list. For Where Are You Now?, this position is well-deserved since it is yet another page-turning thriller that will have readers guessing until the very end. Readers are pulled into the mystery of Charles MacKenzie, Jr., a Columbia University senior who disappears without a trace, whose only contact with his family over a ten-year period was an annual Mother’s Day call to his mother providing assurances that he is fine.
It is not until the tenth annual call that Mack’s sister, Carolyn, decides she has to find out the real story surrounding her brother’s disappearance in order to have any real chance of building a life of her own. After intercepting Mack’s annual call to tell him she intends to track him down at all costs, a message is found in the church collection basket instructing her to immediately stop pursuing his whereabouts. The message urging Carolyn to stop her search only enhances her determination to re-examine the events surrounding his disappearance and to find out the answers once and for all.
Carolyn’s quest takes a number of unexpected twists and turns as she speaks with people who seem to have information about Mack’s disappearance—or at the very least had significant feelings towards him, whether positive or negative—immediately prior to the time he vanished. Each of the characters, from Carolyn’s mother (who was widowed on 9/11) to her mother’s love interest, Elliot Wallace, to the superintendents of the building where Mack lived and was last seen on the day of his disappearance, to Mack’s former roommates have information that just may enable her to solve this mystery. Her determination intensifies as officials begin to pursue their theory that Mack is somehow responsible for the disappearance of another young woman last seen at a nightclub owned by one of Mack’s former roommates.
As the story unfolds, Carolyn finds herself both searching for her brother and trying to clear his name; it is not clear until the story reaches its ultimate conclusion whether she will be able to accomplish either. Consistent with Mary Higgins Clark’s prior bestsellers, Where Are You Now? is a quick read that will keep your attention until the very end—at which point you will be eagerly awaiting the author’s next publication.
