In his introduction, author John Schlimm contends that man has been playing with fire and food since the beginning of time. This book is designed to allow the grill to embrace the nostalgia of grilling along with a new state of mind that doesn’t include meat but still allows for all the fun and flavors with a lot more animal-friendliness.

Grilling Vegan Style offers an abundance of information designed for both beginner grillers and beginner vegans, with clearly broken-down chapters filled with extensive information on grilling tools and tips (wear an apron and keep a fire extinguisher handy) to suggestions on how to stock a “grill friendly pantry” and the various foods to use, including the differences between tofu, seitan and tempeh and how to prepare them for grilling.

The chapters on the food selections are equally abundant in food items but also in event variety, such as for tailgating events, picnics or easy tapas. The range of dishes also includes

  • appetizer type offerings, such as fiery baby artichokes and edamame fritters;
  • salads to include Portobello and radicchio salad;
  • hot sides that include onion rings with garlicky croutons and grilled sesame snow peas;
  • tapas such as grilled corn on the cob with lime and pepper sauce;
  • hearty suppers to include tempeh steaks and grilled picnic pizza.
This cookbook also includes a wealth of suggestions for marinades, picnic desserts and happy hour drinks to make for a complete and satisfying meal experience. The recipes are also healthy and allow for seasonal eating because they predominantly use fresh products, only occasionally calling for vegan egg substitute for a burger recipe.

These 125 recipes are complemented by some aesthetically pleasing photographs that reveal delicious color and texture in the food. The simple and well-organized pages of the book feature one recipe laid out on a single page, often with a photo on the facing page to illustrate the dish.

Grilling Vegan Style is a great grilling companion whether you are vegan, a beginner griller or someone looking for some non-meat dishes for your barbeque menu.
