As the first installment in her Kay Hooper’s “Blood” Trilogy, Blood Dreams is off to an exciting start. Senator Abe Lemott is mourning the death of his beloved daughter, the twelfth victim in the ghastly murder spree of a serial killer. Determined to find the killer, he enlists the help of Special Agent Noah Bishop and his SCU team. Unfortunately, political red tape inhibits full cooperation with the FBI, and the high media coverage for the senator’s daughter drives the homicidal maniac into hiding. Knowing it is just a matter of time before he strikes again, Bishop sends for the help of a special psychic team from Haven, which he himself launched and maintains funding for.
Dani Justice is living in fear as she experiences troubling recurring nightmares starring the elusive serial killer. Although the first one to know he is still active, she fears he may take the life of someone she loves but is not sure who. She visits her twin sister, Paris, now going through a messy divorce, who immediately knows something frightful is up. In addition to their psychic bonds as twins, each has gifts and abilities that they pool together to help catch the killer.
While in town, Dani sees Marc, an old flame who understands her gifts and wants to renew a relationship. Afraid of dragging him into the depths of her evil dream life, she tries unsuccessfully to push him away. The precognitive dream concerning the death of his mother continues to haunt Dani with feelings of guilt, although Marc knows she is in no way responsible. During the visit, Dani finds out that two missing women have the town on edge. When Bishop shows up, the two sisters know the cunning killer has come home to roost. With police stymied and no help coming from Boston, the fledgling psychic team knows it is up to them to catch the monster before he claims another victim or disappears again. Dani quells her instinct to run in the opposite direction and knows that she is the only one with a clear knowledge of how it all ends. Paris tries to help her come to terms with her special gifts and even offers to enter into her nightmares in order to help interpret the killer’s next sadistic move.
