Bounty hunter Stephanie Plum is back for another madcap adventure in Eleven On Top. As always, Janet Evanovich has penned a story that is highly entertaining, smart, and loaded with snappy dialogue. All the characters we’ve come to know and love are back in this latest installment of the series.

Stephanie Plum is a bond enforcement agent, working for her cousin Vinnie in his bail bonds office in Trenton, New Jersey. He hired her after she lost her job as a lingerie buyer for a department store. Being a bounty hunter wasn’t exactly a job she chose, but rather one she fell into. And now she’s had enough.

Over the course of her career, she’s been spit on, cursed at, shot at, firebombed, and stalked by crazed killers. And that’s not even mentioning how many of her cars that have been set on fire or exploded. The final straw comes after she is rolled through the garbage while apprehending a bail jumper. She hands in her resignation and heads home to her apartment.

She decides that it is time to figure out where her life is headed and get a sensible, normal job. Stephanie is tired of being scared and barely making enough money to make ends meet. She reasons that quitting her scary job will make all the scary people in her life will go away. No longer will she have to worry about her apartment being broken into or being held at knifepoint or gunpoint.

Then there are the men in her life. Joe Morelli is a Trenton cop who she’s had an on-again, off-again relationship with for quite some time. Right now, they’re not living together, even though Joe would like that to change. Then there is Ranger. Ranger is a fellow bounty hunter who is mysterious, dangerous and gorgeous. He wants nothing better than to get Stephanie into bed. Beyond that, he has no long range plans.

Stephanie embarks upon her new career hunt and lands a job at a button factory. But it seems that her old job is not quite willing to let her go. She has been getting notes for several days. The first one simply says, “I’M BACK.” The second one says, “DID YOU THINK I WAS DEAD?” Someone is threatening her and she has to figure out who.

This book takes off as Stephanie goes through one job after another, trying to find one that will work for her. As always, she has a series of misadventures that seem totally impossible, except that they are happening to her. Stephanie seems unable to escape her old life and it seems that the threats she is receiving may also have something to do with the latest case that Morelli is working on. Unable to resist, she starts to check into matters on her own.

Her relationship with Morelli heats up again as they spend time together, leaving Stephanie totally confused about what she wants out of that relationship. Then there are the usually family problems as her sister’s wedding gets closer. At the same time, the threats to her get more intense and violent, leaving Stephanie more scared than ever, but determined to get to the bottom of things.

Eleven On Top is everything you expect a Stephanie Plum book to be. Laugh-out-loud funny, the plot is well-crafted and fast moving, taking the reader along for the ride. The characters are irresistible and the story leaves you wondering where it will go next. As usual, Stephanie complicates her life even further, especially with the new job she finally takes. This is a must read for Janet Evanovich fans and leaves you eagerly awaiting the next book.
